Over 33 million people are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV.) The vast majority of these people live in sub-Saharan Africa and have limited access to even the most basic medical resources. Over the last 7 years, volunteers from Huntington Hospital’s Phil Simon Clinic have been working in Northern Tanzania. As members of the global community, these professional men and women- doctors, nurses, social workers, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, teachers and artisans have been sharing their knowledge, compassion and human investment with African colleagues. In that time, Africans and Americans, working side by side have shared the tragedy of this terrible epidemic but also the joy of companionship and new found friendship. The Phil Simon Clinic Tanzania Project demonstrates that even the most modest endeavors can have meaningful outcomes, if you are brave enough to take the leap.
