While HIV and malaria devastate all of sub-Saharan Africa, the suffering caused by these two diseases is especially acute in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. Nigeria has the second largest HIV-infected population in Africa, the largest number of AIDS orphans, and loses roughly 300,000 children and 7,000 mothers each year to malaria. Afam Onyema, Chief Operating Officer of The GEANCO Foundation, will discuss this health crisis in Nigeria and present his foundation's plans to combat these pernicious threats. GEANCO's main project, the establishment of a world-class teaching hospital in the southeastern region of the country, will provide high quality care and organize community-based education and prevention programs focused on lowering the number of Nigerians who contract and/or die from HIV and malaria.
